What is the Ideal BMW Tire Pressure?

Hand Holding Tire Gauge to Tire

For the majority of models, the ideal BMW tire pressure is 32 PSI. However, it’s always best to check your owner’s manual for specific numbers as it can vary for some models. You can also look for a sticker located on the inside edge of the driver’s side door that will tell you. Learn more about how to check tire pressure, BMW tires, BMW spare tires, and more from the experts at the BMW of Idaho Falls service center to get back on the roads of Jackson, WY as soon as possible.

Why do I Need Proper BMW Tire Pressure?

When driving in Bozeman, MT or elsewhere, it is both safer for you and better for your vehicle for your tires to be properly inflated. When your BMW tires are properly inflated it can:

  1. Extend the life of your tires. This is because it reduces wheel spin and excess friction.
  2. Reduce the likelihood of flat or blown out tires. This can prevent accidents and protect your car.
  3. Improve your fuel efficiency. The Department of Energy says properly inflated tires can improve your fuel efficiency by as much as 3.3%.

How to Check Tire Pressure

Most BMW vehicles have a tire pressure monitoring system in their dashboard that will alert you if your tire pressure is low. Taking a reading yourself is actually more accurate. Check your tire’s air pressure when the tires are cold and not immediately after a drive. This will give you a more accurate reading. Then just follow these steps:

  1. Unscrew the valve stem cap and put it somewhere safe.
  2. Place a tire gauge onto the valve stem and firmly press down.
  3. The tire pressure gauge displays the PSI. If it’s right around the 32 PSI mark, you are good.
  4. Remove the gauge.
  5. If you have more than the recommended PSI, let some of the air out by pressing down the center plunger in the valve stem, and re-check.
  6. If the PSI is below what’s recommended, add enough air to bring it up to the recommended level.
  7. Replace the valve stem cap.

If your tire pressure is low and you need more air, there are a few options for you to fill your BMW tires:

  • You can fill your tires at home using a car tire pump.
  • You can visit a Butte, MT-area gas station.
  • You can schedule a service appointment at the BMW of Idaho Falls service center and we can fill them for you.

Don’t wait until you have a flat to check your BMW spare tire’s pressure either. It might be too late. Instead, check your BMW spare tire’s pressure every six months to a year.

Extra BMW Tire Care Tips

  1. Visually inspect your tires regularly for tread wear or cracks in the sidewalls.
  2. If your tires lose air pressure regularly, there could be a slow leak that needs to be inspected immediately.
  3. Keep up to date with the recommended tire rotation and wheel alignment schedule in your BMW owner’s manual maintenance schedule.
  4. If the outside temperature drops quickly, your tire pressure can also drop, which means the warning light may also go on. When this happens, add air at your earliest convenience.
