BMW Announces 1 Series Sedan for 2017

As you may have heard, the BMW 1 Series coupe will be leaving us for the 2014 model year, but fear not. It will be back, with a vengeance.

Given the advent of new compact sedan offerings from the competition, the Bavarian automaker has decided to remake its 1 Series with its sedan option at the forefront. Whether or not we'll see the coupe option returns remains to be seen as of now, and while we will definitely miss it, we're stoked to see what BMW has in store for this new sedan.

The move also has to do with market demand. As of late, the entry-level compact luxury segment has been heating up, with drivers seeking accessibly priced options with a premium look and feel. With this remade 1 Series sedan in hand, BMW will not only be able to expand grip on the U.S. market, but also in emerging markets such as China.

BMW tells us that the new 1 Series will be built on the Unter Klasse platform, with 3- and 4-cylinder engine options for the underpinnings. Given the automaker's leaning towards green and fuel efficient cars, it's quite likely we'll see a diesel and hybrid-electric option as well.

The new 1 Series will begin production in 2016, and arrive at BMW of Idaho Falls in time for the 2017 model year.

Does that seem like too long to wait? Is a coupe what you crave? Worry not, we still have the BMW 1 Series coupe available at our Idaho Falls, ID showroom. Stop by and give a brand new 128i or 135i a test drive while they're still hot.
