BMW Raises the Curtain on the 2014 BMW X5

It's the moment we've all been waiting for, folks. German luxury brand BMW has unveiled the 2014 X5. Behind the curtain, we find the vehicle still boasts its iconic, familiar face. Here at BMW of Idaho Falls, we find that fitting, especially for an SUV with the sort of technology under the hood that has propelled it (literally and figuratively) into a class of its own: the SAV.

The idea of the SAV (short for Sports Activity Vehicle) is as its name suggests: focus on utility is scaled back to focus on the activities the drivers can enjoy. This is the third generation of the X5 line, and as always, it's the auto's engines and powertrain that have been given their due.

The biggest shift here is in the BMW X5 sDrive35i, the first time we've seen rear-wheel drive on this SAV model. That's not to say the all-wheel-drive version has fallen by the wayside. It's still there, and powered by the same 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with 300 pound-feet of torque and 300 horsepower as the rear-wheel variety.

If you're gunning for a powerful, snarlier SAV, there's the sportier BMW X5 xDrive50i. Beneath the bonnet on this trim is the all new TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, which tops out at 445 horsepower--45 extra ponies than the last model--and 480 pound-feet of torque.

Both the sDrive35i and xDrive50i come with eight-speed automatic transmissions and can accelerate from 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and 4.9 seconds respectively.

According to BMW, we can expect the 2014 models to hit our Idaho Falls, ID showroom in the fourth quarter of 2013. For more information on the X5 and its trims, or other SAVs like the X1 and X3, contact us any time.
